Zorro (1990)

In people like Colin McCormick and me, the singular Anton Westman recognized fellow high school over‑achievers. It is no surprise that Anton and Colin’s ambitions for Spanish video kickassness were equal to mine. In particular, they required the final cut to be assembled in editing instead of in camera, to enable shooting in multiple locations with multiple takes, the addition of a musical score, etc.

I was happy to assist, and had access to some of the first “prosumer” VHS VCRs designed for editing, on loan to me from the First Presbyterian Church.

I have fond memories of this film (and rank it highly among my “Top Five Spanish Videos”) but was afraid I’d be unable to give it a proper upgrade. What you see here is sourced from the DVD transfer of a dub of the VHS master, one more generation distant from the camera footage.

This presentation is trimmed to overcome the various technical limitations (including on the day of shooting, like when actors forget their lines) so that the story moves briskly and dialogue flows naturally. I’m glad I made the effort, because the result is better than I expected and all of the scenes are intact. And I’m sure that you, just like I did, will have heaps of fun re‑watching this epic historical tale:
